Importance of Link Building in SEO:
Link building involves getting other websites to link back to yours. Google lays emphasis on the number of high quality websites linking back to your website. Google’s PR (Page Rank) is a measure of a web page’s popularity.
Link Building gives your website wider search engine coverage and is amongst many important aspects considered by search engines, especially Google while determining the rankings of a site. Therefore, creating backlinks is one of the most important tasks you can undertake to promote your website with the search engines. Link building activity falls into two categories:
- Active Link Building: This involves contacting other websites and submitting the URL of your website. The other website might take anything from 1 week to 6 months to link back depending on the type of submission.
- Passive Link Building: This involves link baiting, where we create attractive content and invite other websites to link back to it.
Any website should have a minimum of 250 unique inbound links. There is something called as “too many links” and building links over 1,500 should be avoided. Unique inbound link means we count one link per domain. Relevant links carry more importance than high quality irrelevant links. By relevant website we mean, a website whose theme is similar to ours and contains good unique content.
Search Directories:
Search directories list web sites that are relevant to a given topic and are different from search engines in several aspects. Search directories are usually maintained by humans and the sites in them are reviewed after they have been submitted. These sites are accepted in the directories only if their content is relevant. Some of the most popular search directories are DMOZ, JAYDE and Yahoo! (the directory, not the search engine).
